fear of failure...

Well… I have a problem. I feel so stupid for this. I am attending a class for Spanish language now and during these classes I cannot force myself to answer any questions loudly… What is wrong with me???. I mean, even though I think I know the words, I can’t put them on the board or speak them when called. I am so afraid to be wrong, and be the biggest loser in the class...

Hi Tony, from your post I can see that you are experiencing a strong fear of failure during your classes. From your words I can imagine that it is really hard for you to overcome your fear, and answer the questions in the Spanish class. I feel that you always have in mind the worst scenario possible – that you will be a ‘loser’. But also I feel that your fear of failure which hasn’t happened yet. You are afraid of something you are you don’t really know and not sure aboutsmiling smiley It might sound crazy, but everything is the hardest for the first time. After you try once, you will see that answering questions is safe, and becomes easier with each other time. Make a small step and next time say the answer to yourself, next time to your friend sitting near you etc. Be strong and overcome you fear of failure!smiling smiley

I've read somewhere about how to overcome the fear of failure. Perhaps the unknown future is the biggest source of this fear. For exmple, Tony doesn't know what to expect from the future on his Spanish class when he will start to answer questions loudly, so the consequences seem much worse than they really are. I would recommend to carefully and honestly research all possible ways of the situation (both good and bad ones) so you could really understand the risks of failure and benefits of success. Such thinking can help to see with less fear of failure and come up with first steps to overcome it.

Jill and Anna you gave nice suggestion how to escape from fear of failure, but it is not so easy let’s say I am always afraid when I am doing something new and when I started it looks like it was for nothing, however this positive experience doest help me. I am very stressful normally. It looks like I lost all my self-confidence. I tried several methods, but it didn’t help me really. Maybe some of you tried self-coaching program? Does it really help? If yes, witch one to choose if I am afraid of failure?

Hi, this is Adarsh from India and I am new to the forum and presenting a quote by Monroe Forester "Hope is always available to us. When we feel defeated, we need only take a deep breath and say, "Yes," and hope will reappear." Thanks
